Rice to Europe: "Shut Up"
Reuters is reporting today that Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice plans to tell European leaders seeking assurances that the CIA did not have secret prisons ('black sites') or transmit prisoners through their countries.
However, this comes across as insincere. Why can't the government deny publicly that CIA 'black sites' exist and that suspects are transported through airbases in Europe. Most likely because it isn't true and the government is afraid of getting caught in (yet another) lie.
On a related note, Amnesty International is asking for people to call on the U.S. to end it's policies on rendition and 'disappearances'. If you want to participate, go here.
"Rice will stress in public that Washington does not violate allies' sovereignty or break international law, and she will remind publics their governments are cooperating in a fight against militants who have bombed commuters in Madrid and London."
